This helped in following ways:-&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Clear understanding of key concepts\/facts learnt in a particular chapter<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>I didn\u2019t have to re-read entire book\/chapter<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>I could revise pointedly by understanding where the gap is<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For topics, where standard books were not available, I referred to a varied set of online sources. I generally used to make a digital summary of a particular topic ideally covering definitions, facts\/data\/trends, issues and solutions. The ideal coverage also remained an important criteria for selecting a source.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The following links mention topic wise books\/sources, digital summaries\/revision Q&amp;As and other relevant information. Where &lt;Mains\/Prelims only&gt; is not mentioned against a topic in syllabus or source, it means it is relevant for both Prelims and Mains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">General Studies 1<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">General Studies 2<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">General Studies 3<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">General Studies 4<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Disclaimer-<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>While the content in above links is based on legit sources and I used it in my answers. I would still recommend, you verify and update the data\/facts before using them in your answers or elsewhere.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>There are color codes\/symbols in the Q&amp;A files- please ignore those, I used them as indicators for Qs I need to revise\/re-check etc.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Approaching prelims exam<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">3 step approach to prelims&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Limit your content\u2013 Pick a standard book\/source and don\u2019t read more than one book per topic. It\u2019s true that prelims requires broad based knowledge but the way to add knowledge is not multiple books on the same subject. I augmented the basic sources with following:-\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Previous 20 years Qs bank<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Static quizzes of certain topics (Art &amp; Culture, Environment) on Insights on India for 1 year time period before prelims<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>12 papers of Vision IAS prelims test series<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Revise the content&nbsp;multiple times so that the Qs that can be answered based on standard sources are answered correctly in limited time. The guesswork and time should ideally be utilized for Qs that you aren\u2019t sure about.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Practice via Mocks-&nbsp; Mocks do give additional information but more importantly, they help you simulate real exam conditions. Following are my key leanings:-\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>Time management<\/em>\u2013 I tried to solve 40-50% Qs (<em>only indicative<\/em>) for which I am 100% sure in the first go and mark them on the OMR sheet. I aimed to get done with this in the first 45 minutes. Then I would spend the next 45 minutes on Qs where I am able to eliminate 2 options and then take an educated guess. Then for the remaining 30 minutes I would go through the remaining Qs to see if I am able to eliminate 1 option and take an educated guess with some confidence.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Figuring your sweet spot<\/em>\u2013 In my first mock I scored 85 marks that I solved after one reading and revision of syllabus. There were 2 key reasons- 1) Solving Qs from standard books incorrectly hence increasing negative marking 2) Not taking enough risk- I attempted less than 80 Qs. While everyone has to figure this sweet spot through mocks and it can vary as per toughness of paper but I used to aim for attempting 85+Qs in an average difficulty paper.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>No room for \u201csilly\u201d mistakes<\/em>\u2013 The exam is highly competitive in nature. Thus marking an answer incorrect for reasons such as 1) Not reading Q correctly\/ missing the word&nbsp;<strong>not<\/strong>&nbsp;2) Filling the wrong bubble in OMR 3) Solving a Q in haste etc. is not acceptable. These are completely avoidable, you only need to pay attention.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Don\u2019t be too reckless<\/em>\u2013 In the final exam, I attempted 94 Qs and hence increased negatives. Though I was able to get a score of 115-120 based on various keys, I realized that wild guesses I took in the last few minutes should&nbsp; have been avoided.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tips and tricks<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>One should solve previous year Qs to identify his\/her own tricks<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Watch\u00a0this\u00a0video by Roman Saini<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Some advice on guess work by Abhijeet Sinha.&nbsp;Link<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">CSAT- To prepare or not<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>I solved previous 4 years Q papers and was able to score 130+ in all of these and hence didn\u2019t prepare.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you aren\u2019t able to cross cut-off marks (66) with some buffer in the previous year papers, you need to prepare for this paper.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Few thoughts on answer writing<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Basics of answer writing\u2013 So much has already been said and written about answer writing that there\u2019s no point in reinventing the wheel, I\u2019d rather list down some helpful links.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/@shreyanskumat\/my-two-cents-on-answer-writing-d091b243045f\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">This<\/a>&nbsp;article by Shreyans Kumat summarizes it very nicely and echoes most of my thoughts on how to go about answer writing.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>For getting ideas on improving presentation of answers, see&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Ef184kmjO7Y\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">this<\/a>&nbsp;video by Aashima Mittal<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Anudeep Durishetty\u2019s few articles such as&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/anudeepdurishetty.in\/gs-2-answer-writing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">this<\/a>&nbsp;also suggest that his book is relevant and useful but properly weigh in RoI of spending time to read a book.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/yashkumawat.online\/?p=318\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/yashkumawat.online\/?p=318\">How I practiced answer writing\u00a0\u2013<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Mock test series of Vision IAS where they take 12 tests- 8 syllabus wise and 4 combined GS wise. I started it right from 9th June (first weekend after Prelims).\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Do analyze the feedback but don\u2019t take every word seriously. After all, its a subjective evaluation<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Do go through the sample answers given Vision IAS but don\u2019t be disheartened by amount of information. Its an ideal answer prepared without time limit\/ need of recall.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Do refer to the best answer sheets uploaded by Vision IAS team for reference but don\u2019t get critical about how could one remember so much facts\/write so much content for every Q write so neatly in the limited time. Use it for ideas on improving answers.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Do add any good information in your own source from sample answers\/best answer sheets. I didn\u2019t do this but in hindsight think it could be done for enhancing my GS performance.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>I also solved some questions on InsightsonIndia for GS\/Essay once in a while (not daily). This was mainly to give me the initial push but beware don\u2019t start wasting time in this by engaging in endless comments from other aspirants.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some nuggets of wisdom&nbsp;attained in hindsight<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Time management-&nbsp;Spending so much time here as it\u2019s the most critical aspect\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>Splitting time<\/em>\u2013&nbsp; There are 20 Qs and 3 hours. 10 Qs are of 10 marks each and other 10 Qs are of 15 marks each (trend varies across years, so adjust accordingly). So, 180 minutes need to be divided among 20 Qs with varying weights. 7 minutes per 10 marker, 10 minutes per 15 marker and keeping 10 minutes as buffer makes up for 180 minutes . If you want to attempt all the Qs, every minute counts.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Keeping time the analog way<\/em>\u2013 Now the ideal way to keep track of every minute is by using a digital watch but there were instances of some centers not allowing digital watches in the prelims, so I decided to use an analog watch. For 10 markers, I used to aim for finishing 3 Qs every 20 minutes (i.e. finishing initial 10 Qs in ~70 minutes). For 15 markers, aim used to be finishing 1Q every 10 minutes.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Rome was not built in a day<\/em>\u2013 When I wrote my first Vision IAS test paper I took 4 hours to finish 18 Qs and those were also not solved satisfactorily. But with daily practise of 2-3 Qs on Insights on India and writing 12 timed tests of Vision IAS, I was able to improve on all aspects of answer writing including time management.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>What happened in real<\/em>\u2013\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>~5 minutes are also wasted in admin stuff such as signatures, verification of roll no. et al. I still recommend spending these 5 minutes with full attention as there were some cases in my examination hall who didn\u2019t fill their information correctly and thus their answer sheets would not have been evaluated.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Maximizing attempts\u2013 I always solved 100% of the question paper. Let me illustrate why. If I solve 2-3 Qs more across all 4 GS papers and get on an average 2 marks in each of these, my score increases by 16-24 marks which is a huge jump. Even if you haven\u2019t read a topic before, you can take an educated guess. Few questions below from CSE 2019 to illustrate the point:-\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Cyber dome Q asked in GS3, CSE 2019- This was a bouncer for the majority of the candidates but I still chose to write very generic content about the project and its uses&nbsp;relating it to some intervention to curb cyber crime.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Constitutional morality Q asked in GS 4, CSE 2019- I hadn\u2019t read the term but made some definition assuming it is morality inherent in various constitutional values<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Take the mock test at the earliest\u2013 As Tim Cook said during the commencement ceremony at Stanford, \u201cGraduates, the fact is, when your time comes, and it will, you\u2019ll never be ready.\u201d The fact also remains however much you prepare, you\u2019ll never feel ready to take the test. I started right after prelims and wrote my first test without revision of subject matter. This in hindsight helped me develop the ability of writing good answers with limited content or thinking content on the go. In real exam as well, there\u2019ll be Qs for which you might not have revised the content recently.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Thinking content is not as difficult\u2013 I would generally start by a structure in my head to think about content. Structure for issues on any topic can be various subjects of GS (social, political, economic etc.), input\/process\/output, stakeholder based (govt., implementer, beneficiary etc). Recommendations can be derived directly from issues that you have listed and this also gives a sense of holistic coverage to the examiner.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Quotes can be helpful in GS too\u2013 I compiled a lot of quotes for my essay preparation and used these extensively for concluding my answers. Quotes on optimism in ethics, Quotes on women\/education\/health in GS1\/2 to name a few.&nbsp;I started with a list compiled by Anudeep and then added the catchy quotes that I found using quote extension on google chrome or while reading in general. For the quotes that I compiled, find the document below.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Keywords are important but not too much\u2013 It\u2019s important to understand what each keyword means but beyond a point there\u2019s not much difference between Explain\/ Illustrate\/Elaborate or Analyse\/Critically Analyse\/Examine\/Critically Examine\/Critically evaluate\/ Discuss.
